WHAT IS GLOBALISATION?
Globalisation is a process by which economies and cultures have been drawn deeper together and have become more inter-connected through the global networks of trade, capital, technology and global media. Globalisation allows businesses and countries to specialise in producing goods and services where they have a comparative advantage over their competitors. A reason why we have seen such a rapid increase in globalisation is due in part to improved transport; trading has become easier and more efficient. Globalisation brings many positives such as an increase of cultural diversity, however, it is important to see that is not all positive. It could be said that an increase in trade leads to greater global warming and therefore more hazardous environmental issues. In this project I will be exploring visual representations of cultural diversity found in our everyday society that is a product of globalisation.

JACOB JAMES:
Jacob James is a UK based, internationally published, travel photographer. He started taking photographs 7 years ago. He has traveled the world , capturing thousands of images of multiple cultures from India to Morocco and Israel to Romania as well as Hungary. When travelling to other countries, he travels out of the cities in search of remote places where the indigenous cultures remain as untouched by others as possible. I believe this gives him a more authentic insight into a specific culture.
In his photography i really like the intensity created by the eye contact, it gives the viewer a connection to the photograph, almost as if the viewer is actually face to face with the person in the photograph. The outfits and scenery he captures jump out just as distinctly as the faces he photographs.

FIRST RESPONSE:
For this task I asked my sister to dress dress up in anything she wanted from her box of costumes. I was influenced by the work of Jacob James and how he uses outfits to give the idea that the people have been influenced by their own culture. I did this because due to globalisation there has been a massive increase in immigration. As more and more people immigrate into countries they bring their cultures and beliefs with them creating a larger diversity of culture within the country. Cultures are usually heavily infused with fairytales and folklore and these are usually shown in books, films and social media which are all a big part of the everyday life. So by asking my sister to choose an outfit from her costume box I was seeing what she was most influenced by, for example I found that she was drawn to dresses. One could insinuate that this is due to the excessive amount of princess films she watches such as Cinderella and Snow White which are both based of old fairytales.

WWW: One thing that went well was the use of mirrors in the background. I like this because it creates more than one central focus point. Another thing I thought went well with this photo shoot was that I had a large variety of poses and props meaning that each photograph was unique and different.
EBI: Something I would like to improve is the quality of some of the photographs, some of the images are out of focus or not centred properly.

SECOND RESPONSE:
For this shoot I went to take photos of shops which have been influenced by different cultures. I did this to show the difference in style, format and design that different cultures take when being presented. I went from Muswell Hill to Crouch End taking photographs of any shops which caught my eye or seemed to be influenced by some sort of culture. When doing this I found that most shops presented clearly that they were foreign or not a basic British shop. This was interesting because it was almost as if that by stating it is a foreign shop it makes it seem more appealing to people as it seems more 'exotic'.

WWW: One thing that went well was the shops that I had selected to photograph. They are all completely different with different formats.
EBI: What I found when looking over my photographs was that most of the photographs were lopsided or framed badly so it would be better if they were more centred and in proportion to each other. I would like to change this as i think that the framing of a structural design is very important as it almost sets the frame making the image more presentable. I also think I need more diversity or take more photographs because I feel that I have not truly shown the vast variety of cultural influence onto our consumerism.

EDITS:
WWW: I really like the simplicity created in the photographs when the colour is stripped from the image. This makes me feel that is the colour used in the shop fronts that really expresses the idea that the shops have been influenced by some sort of culture.

James Domine:
Domine is a British photographer who is renowned for his series 'Open Doors'. In this series he took multiple photographs of doors and combined all these photographs to create montages which are often colour coordinated. He is inspired by the vast selections and individuality of every door found in the countries he visits such as North Africa, Turkey and Omen.
The reason I have selected this photographer is because of his use of collages and I could use this as inspiration for my own work. For example I could take a large amount of photographs of shop fronts and edit them all onto one page, creating a collage inspired by Domine.

WWW: One thing I felt that went well was i kept the distance I stood away from each shops relatively the same. I did this by taking each photograph from across the street as it was the easiest measurement I could use when out photographing.
EBI: Something that would improve my photos is if I frame them better, making the shops more central and flat. If I also had a collection of close-ups of each shops to present different perspectives of the shops.

FINAL DEVELOPMENT:
For this project I focused on the visual representation of culture through shop fronts. I Photoshopped images I had previously taken and 'highlighted' the shops to make it clear to the viewer where culture has been shown and influenced the visual representation. I decided to highlight the shops because over time everyone has become normalised to the vast increase in culture.
